Why is 9Gag.com Blocked?
9gag.com is blocked since it contains inappropriate content.
We have gone back and forth on 9gag.com and every time that we block it, we get complaints and people ask us why we are blocking 9gag.com since they have Rules that ban Pornography & Sexual Content and yet while 9gag.com has these rules, they are not very good at enforcing their own rules as nudity and pornography are rampant on 9gag.com.
One of our customer's did a deep dive on 9gag.com and while they seem to remove nudity and pornography on their "main feed," they do not remove nudity when you are logged in; the login does not have any meaningful age verification. Then it gets worse when you look at other logged in user's profiles as there you can find outright pornography.
So while we understand that 9gag.com has mostly good content, we can state that they purposely allow inappropriate content which goes against their own policies, therefore our position is that we must block 9gag.com.
If you feel that 9gag is safe for you, then download their App.
Regarding filtering; I will share with you how it works “under the hood:”
-
We enforce Safe Search for Google, Bing & Yahoo. This is the first level of filtering that is operated by Google, Yahoo & Bing themselves. They do a great job of removing pornography from image searches but still allows some racy images such as lingerie and bikinis. If you ever see anything inappropriate in a Google, Bing or Yahoo image search, report it to us and we’ll report it to them. We do block other search engines under a custom category called “Unsafe Search Engines” – Ex: AOL is unfortunately blocked since they do not have a mechanism that allows their safe search to be permanently turned on.
-
Then we have our own database of millions of sites that contain inappropriate material and these are blocked by us quickly – we have robots that find and categorize thousands of new sites daily.
-
Then, we have our own “Prone to Bad Content” category which blocks sites that are normally good but have unfiltered access to pornography, like Twitter, Tumblr, Imgur, Reddit, and obviously, 9gag.com.
-
Finally, robots make mistakes with their algorithms so we have a fast response to customers and edit categories and block sites manually.
Here's our story:
Background: We originally created SPIN as a companion app to provide kids with a healthy and mindful internet experience and were very pleased when adults and entire families started using it – in the words of one customer: “Everyone needs a PG-13 internet!” Today, SPIN can be controlled by our Boomerang Parental Control and Parental Board products and if you have kids between the ages of 3 and 15, then Boomerang is a must as it helps raise great digital citizens that are not addicted to their devices – check out Boomerang on the Google Play Store.
Based on the tremendous amount of interest from adults, we created Filter Chrome which adds to the value proposition in a similar way that Boomerang does but removes the child centric features and child centric terminology:
- Lock in SPIN Safe Browser and/or Google Chrome
- Blocks All Other Browsers Automatically
- Edit Categories & Customize Experience
- Add Your Own Custom Sites to Block
- Add Your Own Apps to be Blocked
- Daily App Limit: For Well-Being
- Accountability Options to Prevent Removal
Check out the full value proposition on our website; http://filterchrome.com and try Filter Chrome from Google Play
